I Still Dance at the Edge of the Cliff

Christine Ray

Brave and Reckless

Lulled into a false sense

Of security

I forget

How close

I hover to

The abyss

Stunned at how

Easily

Darkness can

Creep back

Swirl around my ankles

Curl around my wrists

Like bracelets

Like handcuffs

This darkness

Is beginning

To transform

Me

Into

Something

Other

Mouth into

Beak

I squawk in protest

Skin sprouting

Razer-sharp quills

Feet into claws

Deeply scratch the floor

Fingers stretch

Into talons

Tipped with steel

That I use

To rip myself

To tatters

Remove

My own heart

Bite into it

With

Teeth made

Fangs

Till blood runs

Down

My chin
